Current Status and Prospects of UK Residential Solar Installation 2024

Solar installation in-roof system uk

The year 2023 marked a record-breaking period for domestic solar installations in the UK, with nearly 190,000 installations registered, a nearly 30% rise compared to the previous year. This surge was largely driven by the absence of government subsidies, indicating a maturing market that can sustain itself through consumer demand and material cost reductions. As of 2024, the residential solar installation landscape in the UK is continuing the upward trend. With over 1.7 million homes equipped with solar panels (5% of UK households), the adoption rate is rapidly increasing.

Financial Incentives for Solar and Battery Installation

Although direct government subsidies like the Feed-in-Tariff have ended, there are still various incentives and support mechanisms in place that benefit residential solar installations.

VAT Exemption: UK government has introduced a VAT-free incentive for solar panel and/or battery installations. Effective from April 2022, this initiative removes 20% VAT applied to energy-saving materials.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): Introduced in 2020, SEG allows homeowners to receive payments for excess electricity generated by their solar panels that is exported back to the grid. Rates vary by supplier but typically range from 4.1p to 15p per kWh.

Home Upgrade Grant (HUG): This scheme provides up to £10,000 for solar panel installations for low-income households, significantly reducing upfront costs.

Solar PV System Technological Advancements

The advancements in solar technology have significantly contributed to the adoption of residential solar installations. Innovations such as more efficient solar panels (e.g. > 450 W peak output panels) and enhanced battery storage systems have made it easier for households to store excess energy and use it when needed, thus maximising the benefits of their solar installations. Additionally, the integration of smart grid technology and smart home energy management systems is helping homeowners optimise their energy usage, further driving the adoption of residential solar solutions.

Future Prospects of UK Residential Solar Market

The future of residential solar installations in the UK looks promising. The market is seeing sustained growth even without subsidies, driven by high energy prices, environmental concerns and a growing market for electric vehicles. The UK government’s commitment to renewable energy through policies like the Future Homes Standard, which mandates higher energy efficiency in new homes, is expected to further boost the solar market.

Overall, the combination of technological advancements, financial incentives, and supportive policies is creating a favourable environment for the continued growth of residential solar installations in the UK. As more households adopt solar energy, the country’s renewable energy capacity is set to expand, contributing to both economic savings and environmental sustainability.
